Macfarlan Smith is part of the Johnson Matthey group
They recently awarded Extract Technology the contract for a Finishing Area Facility to accommodate their new Pressure Filter Dryer; the turn key package included the design, installation and commissioning of the entire facility for their site in Edinburgh.
The new finishing area consisted of four main areas; the finishing room, materials Airlock, shower area and a personnel changing area. The finishing room accommodated a Charles Thompson Filter Dryer which had a horizontal Laminar Flow Booth also supplied by Extract Technology bolted directly onto its product outlet port.
The Laminar Flow Booth was backed up by a continuous liner system to provide additional protection to the operators from the pharmaceutical materials being discharged.
A new HVAC system was also installed by Extract Technology to feed the facility. This was mounted directly above the area and provided temperature controlled air which was distributed to each individual room. The pressure regime within the facility was critical, with all rooms being positively pressurised with regards to the production area.
The entire facility was constructed within one of Macfarlan Smiths live production facilities requiring the installation to be done without any disruption to the ongoing operations. This was further complicated by the fact that all areas within the building were classified as Zone 1 & 2 so strict liaison with ongoing operations was crucial.
